Erasing Legacy Debt Allows Doorway to Learning to Invest in Enrichment Activities
At Doorway to Learning, we believe that every child deserves more than care — they deserve inspiration. While we are proud to provide a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate environment for the children of Door County, our vision reaches far beyond simply meeting the standard.
We want to ignite imaginations. We want to spark joy. We want to introduce creativity, culture, music, movement, and wonder into the earliest years of life.
But legacy debt has made that difficult. The financial burden inherited from the former Door Community Child Development Center (DOCO) and Children First Development Center — more than $4.25 million in total — has forced us to make difficult decisions. And one of the most painful sacrifices has been the enrichment activities that transform early childhood education from something good into something truly exceptional.
We are doing a good job. But our children deserve better than “good enough.” That’s why this capital campaign matters so much. By retiring our debt, we remove the constraints that have held us back. And in their place, we can restore what was lost — and imagine what has never yet been tried.
We envision a child care center that partners with Door County’s most vibrant cultural institutions to create unforgettable early learning experiences.
We see musicians from Midsummer’s Music gently introducing tiny fingers to strings, rhythms, and melodies — laying the groundwork for a lifelong appreciation of the arts. We imagine visiting artists from the Peninsula School of Art turning classrooms into miniature studios, where three-year-olds learn to express themselves through color, shape, and design. We picture our students learning the joy of structured creative play through a partnership with Third Avenue PlayWorks — standing in front of their peers, discovering confidence, collaboration, and communication. Experiencing nature through field trips to The Ridges and Crossroads, or taking swimming lessons through the YMCA.
These aren’t extras. They are essential.
Exposure to the arts in early childhood improves cognitive development, strengthens emotional regulation, encourages empathy, and teaches creative problem-solving. In a county as culturally rich as ours, we are uniquely positioned to offer these experiences — if we have the flexibility to invest in them.
By giving to this campaign, you are not just helping us pay off a financial obligation. You are clearing the path for a richer, fuller educational experience for the children of Door County.
You are helping us shift from “what we can afford” to “what our children deserve.”
Together, we can do more than keep the lights on. We can light a spark.
Join us in creating a place where young minds are not only nurtured, but awakened. Let’s ensure that Doorway to Learning is not just a good place for children — it’s an exceptional one.
Because early childhood should be filled with more than routine. It should be filled with wonder.
